Vitiligo is an acquired pigmentation disorder that affects about 1% of the world population and it's characterized by the development of well-defined white macules on the skin. The depigmentation mechanism in vitiligo is not well clarified. There is considered to be an absence of functional melanocytes caused by genetic and non-genetic factors. Multiple theories have been suggested to explain the destruction of melanocytes in vitiligo. Vitiligo is typically presented by asymptomatic depigmented macules and patches that don’t show clinical signs of inflammation. Lesions may appear at any age and anywhere on the body. Early onset of vitiligo seems to be related to involvement of a larger body surface and faster progression of the disease. Based on the distribution of depigmented lesions, vitiligo is divided into two broad categories, segmental and non-segmental. It is often associated with autoimmune thyroid disease. Alopecia areata, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and several other autoimmune and genetic disorders are also associated with vitiligo. The treatment goals include the stabilization of the active disease and repigmentation of depigmented lesions. However, the response to treatment is slow and can be very variable. Treatment includes topical therapy, systemic therapy, phototherapy, surgical and alternative methods. Despite the treatment, most patients experience varying periods of pigment loss and stability of the disease. Occasionally, patients may experience spontaneous repigmentation.
