At the practice of general practitions (GPs) patients who suffer pain are frequently encountered, hence the treatment of such pain is one of the priorities in the patient care. Pain is a symptom with a protective role, since it indicates a potential or existing tissue damage and is considered a universal human experience, often called the fifth vital sign. The management of the phenomenon of pain requires a multidisciplinary approach which involves patient assessment as well as quantification of pain, appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy, psychological approach and preservation of the functional and working abilities. Due to the difficulties in the assessment of pain intensity, each individual is approached differently, the most appropriate method is chosen and medication is selected according to the health status. Furthermore, the presence of other comorbidities and interaction with other drugs in the treatment and minimization of possible side effects of prescribed painkillers is taken into consideration. The biggest problem faced is the treatment of chronic pain to which special attention is paid, due to the disruption to the quality of patients' life as well as socio-economic factors of their integration into the society. We must place emphasis on the education of patients and their immediate family, which enables better compliance and successful therapeutic effect.
