Abstract (english) | Introduction: The Mediterranean diet is based on the consumption of minimally processed foods, as vegetables, fruits, fish, olive oil and moderate consumption of red wine. In the last few years, numerous methods have been developed to measure the quality of nutrition, as well as numerous point systems and indices that can also determine the nutrition quality.
Aim: The main aim of this research was to evaluate the nutrition quality of students at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management of the University of Rijeka and to determine the adherence to the Mediterranean diet by using different indices.
Subjects and methods: The study involved 455 students, of whom 336 were female, and 119 were male.
Results: According to MDQI, male students achieved 8,19, female 7,44, and total MDQI score was 7,63. There is no significant difference between male and female. According to the MDS, total score for male was 3,82, for female 3,64, and the total MDS was 3,65 with no statistically significant difference between male and female. According to the MDS+fish index, male students achieved 4,14, female 3,97, and the total score was 4,02 points without statistically significant differences between them. There was no correlation between body mass index and the nutrition of students.
Conclusion: Achieved points indicate the need to increase the intake of fruit, vegetables nad fish as well as other „useful“ foods that are characteristic for Mediterranean diet and there is a clear need to create a health promotion program with particular emphasis on nutrition and nutrition habits of young people |
