The anterior cruciate ligament plays an important role in the biomechanics of the knee joint. In addition to participating in the stabilization and control of joint movement, its major role is in resisting anterior tibial translation. The usual mechanism of its injury is related to excessive anterior translation of the tibia and valgus of the knee with additional rotation of the tibia. Therefore, anterior cruciate ligament injuries are often associated with cartilage, meniscus, or medial collateral ligament injuries. In addition to specific clinical tests and standard X-rays to confirm the diagnosis of its injury, we are increasingly using magnetic resonance imaging. Anterior cruciate ligament injury is today one of the most common knee injuries that occur during sports activities. Therefore, in order to reduce their number, special preventive programs of exercises and procedures have been developed. For injuries that have already occurred, the method of treatment is surgical reconstruction with autologous grafts, of which the hamstring tendons and the patellar ligament are most commonly used. In addition, the development of arthroscopic techniques of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction has made it easier to treat joint knee injuries. In this way, in addition to stabilizing the knee, other factors that significantly affect the earlier development of posttraumatic osteoarthritis can be eliminated.
