A quarter of women after childbirth has sexual intercourse within six weeks of childbirth. Of contraceptive methods that do not contain hormones, women after childbirth can use natural methods of contraception and barrier methods. Of methods of contraception that contain hormones women after childbirth can use long-acting reversible contraception which includes intrauterine contraception, hormone implants and injectable contraceptives, and short-acting hormonal contraception which includes progestin only pills. As a method of permanent contraception in women after childbirth can be performed sterilization which can be performed immediately after childbirth or within 24 hours of childbirth. Emergency contraception in women after childbirth has to be applied within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse, and is applied by progestin pills or intrauterine device that releases copper.
