Each preschool institution should provide a good introduction to further education to every child, in the environment that provides security and protection. By spending most of their days in the preschool institution, children are exposed to activities with various health risks that may adversely affect their health, ultimately to growth and development. The aim of this research was to determine the health risks in the preschool institution by controlling the established hygienic and sanitary measures that constitute a key element in the preservation of health. The health risk management was carried out according to the positive legislative and professional knowledge in the field of enviromental health, in a period of one calendar year in a preschool institution in the Primorsko- Goranska County. The study included testing of the health safety of food and microbiological purity of surfaces and objects in the framework of self-control according to the principles of the HACCP system and proper diet by chemical testing of meals in preschool institutions. The results are rated as satisfactory according to the values prescribed by the relevant laws and regulations, while the examination of the quality of nutrition has determined the deviations in the energy value of all meals and the share of proteins in one sample. The microbiological purity of the air was performed after the work of the air purifier whose results were not satisfactory in terms of the efficiency of the device. A potential health risk is also recognized in the sandbox of the preschool institution, based on which the test revealed the presence of cysts Giarde spp. and eggs Toxocare sp. A professional inspection of disinfection, disinsection and pest control measures did not determine the infestation of pests. Such research indicates the importance of continuous investment in health protection and the control of health risks in order to preserve a quality and health-conscious environment for the growth and development of the child during his stay in preschool institution
