Laryngopharyngeal reflux means the return of stomach contents into the laryngopharynx, i.e. the return of stomach contents containing pepsin, bile acid salts and other proteins that cause changes in the epithelium of the laryngopharynx and the rest of the epithelium of the respiratory system. Patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux can present with different symptoms regarding the involvement of the upper respiratory system. However, they are most often presented in the area of the larynx, so the symptoms are hoarseness, cough, chronic throat clearing, globus, dysphagia, episodes of suffocation. There are two theories in the treatment approach for laryngopharyngeal reflux. The first theory advocates empirical treatment and relies on the patient's response to therapy. Proponents of the second theory see the approach to treatment in the initial specific diagnostic testing followed by therapy. The treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux includes a combination of lifestyle changes, diet and medication. Medical treatment includes proton pump inhibitors, histamine receptor blockers, alginates and antacids. Carcinomas of the larynx are the second most common tumor in the head and neck region. The most common type of tumor is carcinoma of the squamous epithelium of the larynx. The most significant risk factor for the development of laryngeal cancer is smoking, it is related in 70-90 percent of cases. In 98 percent of cases, it is about cancers localized in the supraglottic and glottic region, where glottic cancers are three times more common.
