Multiple sclerosis is a disease characterized by multicenter demyelination of the central nervous system. The etiology is not clearly established. Symptoms in the orofacial region are often present in patients with Multiple sclerosis. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of oral symptoms by patients with multiple sclerosis and to determine the association of oral symptoms with the duration of the disease. The study involved 33 patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis according to McDonald's diagnostic criteria, which were processed in the Association of Multiple Sclerosis of the Primorje - Gorski kotar County and 33 control subjects who were processed in the primary dental office. Respondents completed a questionnaire about biographical information, health status and oral symptoms. Patients with MS have significantly more oral symptoms than control subjects. They most often complained of difficulty swallowing (42.4%) and impaired speech (42.4%). The average number of oral symptoms in patients with MS was 2.52 ± 1.94, while in control subjects the number of oral symptoms was 0.36 ± 0.54. No statistically significant correlation was found between the number of oral symptoms and the duration of MS (r = 0.16; p> 0.05). Patients with MS who have been ill for more than 20 years have a 6.5 – fold increased risk of difficulty swallowing. The obtained results indicate an increased prevalence of oral symptoms, ie impaired oral function in patients with MS.
