A dental implant is a structure that is surgically built into a toothless part of the jaw with the purpose of substituting a root. Today are used the endosteal dental implants made of titanium which have showed very good integration with the host bone tissue. The components of the implant are a matter which is built into the bone - a secondary part functioning as an extension and a suprastructure which mimics the real tooth. These can have different shapes, surfaces, diameters and lengths. The most important characteristic of dental implants is the integration into the adjacent bone which is called oseointegration. Some indications for a dental implant are lack of a tooth, partial and total anodontia. Contraindications can be divided into the absolute, which prohibit this type of therapy and into the relative contraindications which enable therapy with caution. Prior to surgical installation of the implant it is necessary to make an extensive clinical and radiological analysis of local condition of soft and hard tissues. The surgical procedure is divided into two stages. In the first, the implant is built into the bone and after 3 to 6 months starts the second stage. In the second stage, the implant is displayed and abutment or sulkus former is installed. The therapy is terminated by making a prosthetic substitute which can be an autonomous crown, a bridge or a prosthesis. Complications can occur during and after the treatment so these have to be noticed and treated in time.
