A hernia is characterized as the protrusion of an organ or a portion of an organ through the natural barrier that is meant to contain it. Inguinal and femoral hernias are known together as groin hernias. Inguinal hernias can manifest as heaviness or discomfort in the groin area or as a visible and palpable bulge. The discomfort is typically more noticeable when there is an increase in intraabdominal pressure, such as during activities like coughing or prolonged standing. Several risk factors include previous hernia and its repair, male gender, chronic cough, abdominal wall injury, and smoking. Congenital inguinal hernias occur due to a medical condition or abnormality such as a disorder of the closure of the processus vaginalis. On the other hand, acquired hernias develop when the fibromuscular tissue of the abdominal wall weakens or is disrupted. Inguinal hernias are further classified as direct and indirect. Femoral hernias are located inferior to the inguinal ligament and protrude through the femoral ring. Femoral hernias are acquired. Physical examination, ultrasound, computed tomography or diagnostic laparoscopy are used as diagnostic methods. Definitive treatment of all hernias, regardless of their origin or type, is surgery. There are two repair options, open and laparoscopic. The open techniques involve frontal approach to the hernia defect and procedures such as tension-free mesh repairs as well as non-mesh tissue repairs. Shouldice, Bassini, McVay, and Desarda repairs are open techniques that accomplish tissue repair without utilizing mesh. On the other hand, tension-free repairs involving the use of mesh are for example Lichtenstein repair, plug and patch repair, and preperitoneal repair. Laparoscopic approach includes the two most common techniques and those are total extraperitoneal approach and transabdominal preperitoneal approach.
