Abstract
Vegetarijanstvo je prehrambeni izbor koji podrazumijeva isključivanje mesa, ribe i morskih plodova iz prehrane. Vegetarijanci se uglavnom oslanjaju na biljnu hranu, uključujući voće, povrće, žitarice, mahunarke, orašaste plodove i sjemenke, kao izvor nutrijenata. U posljednje vrijeme diljem svijeta primjećuje se porast popularnosti vegetarijanskog stila života. Epigenetika se temelji na promjenama koje se događaju izvan DNA sekvence, a obuhvaća modifikacije u ekspresiji gena. Epigenetičke modifikacije igraju ključnu ulogu u normalnom razvoju i održavanju zdravlja, no isto tako mogu biti povezane s raznim bolestima. Svaka izmjena epigenetičkih modifikacija može rezultirati nenormalnom aktivacijom ili utišavanjem gena, što može dovesti do pojave bolesti. Vegetarijanski stil prehrane povezan je s nižim indeksom tjelesne mase, nižom prevalencijom dijabetesa i hipertenzije, nižom prevalencijom metaboličkog sindroma i njegovih sastavnih čimbenika, nižom smrtnošću te nižom incidencijom karcinoma u usporedbi s općom populacijom.
Abstract (english)
Vegetarianism is a dietary choice that excludes meat, fish and seafood from the diet. Vegetarians rely mainly on plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, as a source of nutrients. Recently, there has been an increase in the popularity of the vegetarian lifestyle around the world. Epigenetics is based on changes that occur outside the DNA sequence, and includes modifications in gene expression. Epigenetic modifications play a key role in normal development and health maintenance, but they can also be associated with various diseases. Any change in epigenetic modifications can result in abnormal gene activation or silencing, which can lead to disease. Vegetarian eating style is associated with lower body mass index, lower prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its component factors, lower mortality and lower incidence of cancer compared to the general population.
