Abstract Ortodontska je terapija zadnjih godina terapija izbora i među odraslim pacijentima, no zbog izostanka rasta i razvoja tkiva te prisutnosti određenih stanja koja tipično češće prate odraslu dob, primjerice gubitak zubi, prisutnost parodontne bolesti, razni temporomandibularni poremećaji, migracija zuba u bezubi prostor, gingivna recesija, kvalitativne i kvantitativne promjene kosti te prisutnost općih bolesti, kod ove je skupine pacijenata potreban drugačiji pristup i nužna je upoznatost s mogućnostima i ograničenjima terapije.
Abstract (english) In recent years orthodontic treatment is the treatment of choice even among adults. However, due to the absence of tissue growth and presence of a variety of conditions, such as tooth loss, periodontitis, temporomandibular disorders, migration of teeth into edentulous area, gingival recession, qualitative and quantitative bone changes and the existence of various systemic diseases, this group of patients requires a different approach and knowledge of treatment possibilities and limitations is absolutely necessary. Orthodontic tooth movement has been proven beneficial for periodontally compromised patients because of the stimulating effect on bone apposition. Also, in edentulous areas orthodontics can be used as a basis for prosthodontic treatment, while in cases of skeletal deformity it is necessary preparation for orthognatic surgery. The relationship between orthodontic treatment and TMD is yet to be fully elucidated by scientific evidence, while recently growing attention has been placed on the effect of orthodontic treatment on obstructive sleep apnea. The purpose of this study was to reveal the attitude of adult patients towards orthodontic treatment and to detect the main reason for undertaking treatment with a use of a questionnaire. The results show a high satisfaction rate (99% would recommend orthodontic treatment as treatment of choice and 86.1% have rated satisfaction with outcome as „very satisfied“), underscore the importance of aesthetics even in adulthood (to 70% dental aesthetics is their primary reason for undertaking treatment) and the importance of awareness about adult orthodontics among dentists because of their significant role in patients’ motivation.
