Hemostasis is a spontanius way to stop the bleeding from injured blood vessel. Platelets takes the central place in hemostasis. Thrombosis is a patological condition in which thromb is created in absence of bleeding. Blood vessel injury, recreated blood flow or abnormal blood coagulation are the most common reasons of trombosis. When thromb is detached from a place where it appearce it becomes embolus and by blood stream it may be carried away to another part of the body. Antiplatet and anticoagulant medications represent the group of drugs that are used in the prevention and treatment of tromboembolic diseases. Antiplatet medications interfere with the functioning of platelets, thus inhibiting platelet aggregation. Anticoagulants inhibit the production of clotting factors. In the last fifthteen years in daily dental treatment or oral surgery patients were mostly discontinuing their antiplatet and anticoagulant therapy 7-10 days before treatment. New studies have proven that discontinuing the therapy may cause thromboembolic complications during the postoperative period. On the other hand, there is no study that proves enlarged risk of hemorragic complications acording to patients who continued their antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy during oral surgery and dental treatments. New studies concluded that their is no need to discontinue antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy before daily dental treatment or oral surgery.
