Abstract

Uterine rupture is a lifethreatening complication for both mother and the newborn. It is sometimes precedes by warning, recognizable symptoms, but they are often absent and the rupture appears as a surprise. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of uterine rupture at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Hospital Rijeka. Furthermore, to determine risk factors that can lead to rupture,to establish mortality and to present therapeutic procedure. There were analized 42 ruptures in period from 2006.-2015. The highest influence on uterine rupture had previous caesarian section, which was present in 37 (88,09%) cases. Incomplete uterine ruptures were more frequent, 33 (78,57%), in relation to complete ones, 9(21,43%). The most frequently applied therapeutic procedures was rupture suture, and in only two patients was made hysterectomy. There was not registered a single death of a mother and fetus. The rupture frequency in the total number of deliveries was one rupture at 717 deliveries. This research showed that previous caesarian section is the most common cause of uterine rupture. Therefore, caesarian section should be avoides when-ever possible, not just because of rupture, but also because that can have a negative impact on woman΄s reproductive ability.
