Abstract

Orthognathic surgery is part of maxillofacial surgery that corrects related skeletal deformities. Skeletal deformities represent a change in proportion of maxillo - mandibular complex and / or dentoalveolar arches in combination. The most common symptoms in patients with skeletal deformities are problems with breathing , chewing , swallowing and speaking. Contact between the occlusal surfaces of the teeth is called occlusion. Deformities can be divided into dentoalveolar, skeletal, or their combinations. With dentoalveolar deformities are dealing exclusively orthodontists while the most common approach in the treatment of deformity of the jaw is orthodontic - surgical . The study included 47 patients hospitalized for treatment of jaw deformity at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery , University Hospital Centre Rijeka in the period from June 2009 to March 2016. The study showed that the number of patients has increased over the years. Women and younger patients more often have orthognathic operation. The most common diagnosis is mandibular prognathism , and the operation most commonly performed was osteotomia bimaxillaris which had the highest number of days of hospitalization. Most of surgical operations were performed in surgeon - orthodontist collaboration. Complications such as postoperative infection and neurological and sensitive deficit were rare.
