Dental implants are biocompatible substitutes that replace part of the tooth that lies in the bone. They are the basis for crowns, bridges and dentures. Modern implants are made of titanium or its alloys. They provide masticatory-functional rehabilitation and a high level of aesthetics. According to the time pased from the extraction of the tooth, one can differ immediate, early and late implantation. Immediate takes place immediately after the tooth has been extracted, early six to eight weeks after the extraction, and late when a tooth was extracted a long time ago, in case of insufficent width and height of the alveolar ridge, and unfinished growth and development. Another classification of the surgical procedures is the two-phase and single-phase. Implantation of two-phase implants is done in two surgical acts, in the first, an implant is inserted in the bone, and in the second, that takes place after osseointegration, the cover screw from the implant is removed and healingabutment is placed. In single-phase implants, there is only one surgical procedure in which the implant and the healing cap are put at the same time. One possibilitiy is flapless technique of implantation. This technique involves transmucosal implant insertion. Implants can be immediately or delayed loaded. Immediate load takes place immediately after implantation or within 48 hours, and delayed after 48 hours. Before any surgery is taken the surgeon should be familiar with the history of patient, his wishes and do a thorough clinical and X-ray analysis.
