Hyaluronic acid is a natural glycosaminoglycan composed of disaccharide units. It is a component of the extracellular matrix and appears in the highest concentration in the human body in the synovial fluid, vitreous and umbilical cord. As a biological molecule, it participates in various cellular processes and acts as a mechanical support to tissues. Native (own) HA is degraded too quickly in the body and today networked HA with improved properties is used. There are two methods for industrial production of HA; extraction from animal sources and microbial fermentation using bacterial strains. Degradation of HA is a gradual process that can occur by enzymatic or non-enzymatic reactions. In medicine, HA can be used as a drug carrier, participate in the targeted delivery of tumor drugs and in the formation of conjugates. As a filler, it is effectively used for the treatment of vesiculourethral reflux, in viscosupplementation for osteoarthritis and as a saline solution in ophthalmic surgery. Also, HA is considered to be one of the key factors in the tissue regeneration process. By injecting HA filler into the skin, visible signs of aging are removed and the lost volume is replaced, providing a natural look while the risk of complications is minimal. The choice of application technique and the experience of the therapist are important.
