Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine is womens' perception of facial profile related to sexual hormones. One hundred and eleven female dental students were involved in this investigation, seventy nine of them in infertile phase of menstrual cyclus and thirty two in a fertile phase. The fertility of the investigated students was determined from the salive sample tested on Maybe Baby miscroscope. To assess profile atractiveness, two sets of colour photographs were used which represented thirteen men and thirteen women profile distorsion of Caucasian facial profiles which reveal different dentoalveolar and skeletal sagittal maxillo-mandibular relations. Each profile was graded from 0 to 10 which was combined by numeric rating scale where 0 stand for "I don't like it at all" and 10 "I like it very much". Male profiles were graded twice – from social and emotional aspect. The cluster analysis and two-way ANOVA were used in statistical analysis. Reproducibility of grading profile atractiveness was moderate, from 0.36 to 0.79. The most beautiful male profile was flat profile with mild bialveolar retrusion, and female profile the one with slight bialveolar protrusion. The evaluation of atractiveness of male profiles was statistically significantly different depending on the aspect of the evaluation and type of the profile (p<0.001). Male profiles were graded with lower grades by the women in infertile phase and from the emotional aspect. The survey didn't show statistically significant difference at the same profile in two different hormonical phases, altough profiles were grouped differently into three clusters regarding atractivity. The survey showed that in the fertile phase pronounced and moderate aliterations are more similar, and in the infertile phase moderate and very mild aliterations. Estimation of the female profiles was less related to the hormonal state.
