Abstract

Traumatic tooth injuries are most often happening to children. Deciduous and permanent teeth damages can be very difficult, especially if they happen in combination with soft tissue injury, and are very stressful for both the child and his parents. Taking care of those teeth is very important to retain teeth vitality and prevent their loss. Losing teeth can be very emotionally and socially hard for the child in his future life. Since with traumatic tooth injury usually comes soft tissue injury, which means severe bleeding, parents often look for help from their family doctor. Therefore, it is very important that doctors know how to treat traumatic tooth injuries to keep the tooth healthy and make further child development possible. This research was carried out in form of a questionnaire among medicine students on Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka. Research included 86 students on 3rd, 4th and 5th year. Questionnaire had 23 questions about demographics, personal experience with traumatic tooth injuries, theoretical knowledge about traumatic teeth injuries and their will to learn more about the subject. Research has shown that 27,9% of examinees had some kind of traumatic tooth injury, 33,3% were male and 25,0% were female. Tooth most often injured was incisor tooth. Research has shown that medicine students have average knowledge about traumatic tooth injuries. Results show that vast majority of students were not informed nor educated about traumatic tooth injuries during their studies, but they show the will and are aware of the importance of being educated about this problem.
