Abstract

Dental caries is an localized bacterial infection that causes demineralization of the enamel, dentin and cementum. It is a public health problem that can have numerous harmful consequences. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of dental caries and status of oral health of six-year-old children in elementary schools from Rijeka. The study was carried in 2012. year on 500 children aged 6 years from Rijeka. After the lectures on oral hygiene and obtaining a written consent form from the parents, a clinical examination was performed by two calibrated dentists using a plane dental mirror and a dental probe. Presence and distribution of dental caries, fillings and missing teeth were recorded in special designed forms recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). Every child received a free kit for oral health containing toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. The results of this study showed a high caries prevalence among six-year-old children in elementary schools from Rijeka. The % of caries free children was 22 which is below the WHO recommendation for 2020 (90%). Oral health and frequency of dental visits are not satisfactory indicating a need of improvement of preventive public oral health programs and strategy in this population.
