Maryland bridges are one peace fixed prostheses of reduced form which are attached to the oral surfaces on the abutment teeth of the interrupted dental arch. The indications for making the Maryland bridge are compensation for the loss one of maxillary incisors, and one or two mandibular lower incisors, and if regular jaw relations are present. The conditions for making a Maryland bridge are caries resistant oral cavity, good oral hygiene and healthy abutment teeth. Contraindications are low clinical crowns, heavily restored abutment teeth, extensive caries, patients with bruxism and parafunctions, inability to set up a dry working field, a cover bite, a deep vertical bite, a large gap between abutment teeth, and the mobility of the abutment tooth. At the end of the twentieth century there was the development of ceramics, and the first fully ceramic adhesive bridges were made of glass-infiltrated aluminum-oxide ceramics. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, zirconium-oxide ceramics began to be used as material for framework. In certain cases lithium-disilicate ceramics can be used. In practice, it has been found that ceramic fractures occur more frequently in aluminum-oxide and lithium-disilicate ceramics, and that in zirconium-oxide ceramics occurs debonding. Zirconium-oxide ceramics offers excellent strength, resistance to fracture and toughness, but the flaw in that material is its inability to make adhesive bond with the teeth.
