Abstract

Physical rehabilitation is a selection of methods used in the recovery of function in some damaged body part. The aim of physical rehabilitation is to educate the patient about different exercises and aids with purpose of easing his activities of daily living. With ever increasing life expectancy of modern man, osteoporosis is becoming a considerable problem. As a consequence of sedentary life style and lower levels of hormones, osteoporosis is the main risk factor in hip fractures. Leading causes of hip fractures are falls. Therapy for hip fracture is surgical and main methods used are partial arthroplasty, total arthroplasty and osteosynthesis. Rehabilitation following surgical intervention is time when patient, with help of a physician, exercises his musculature and learns to use his body in a way least burdening for the leg involved. For determining patient’s capabilities in this paper, Barthel’s and Katz’s indexes were used. The study was conducted over 66 patients with Barthel’s index and 40 with Katz’s index. Using the files from the Department of Physical medicine and rehabilitation processed in statistical software Statistica, physical medicine has proved itself as an extremely effective and valuable process in recovery of the patient and invaluable in his return to the activities of daily living.
